Go with the glow and visit both the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, as well as enchanting Ruakuri Cave. Discover thousands of illuminating glowworms as you explore these glittering underground worlds on two walking tours.

  

The Otorohanga Kiwi House

The Otorohanga Kiwi House is a registered charity so every visit to the Kiwi House supports our conservation work. Visits to the park are self-guided with guaranteed opportunities to see active kiwi in our nocturnal enclosures. Experience NZ’s unique forest birds and tuatara in NZ’s largest free-flight enclosure. Meet kea, kaka, whio and other endangered NZ birds and reptiles up close at our daily scheduled keeper talks (Covid-19 restrictions may apply). Learn about our breeding programmes to help conserve NZ’s taonga species. Admission to the park is open for two consecutive days. Opening hours are 10am-4pm, every day except December 25th.

Tours depart from 9am. We run additional tours in summer (to be confirmed at booking).

Allow 1 hour for the Waitomo Glowworm Cave and 1.5 hours for Ruakuri Cave.

Check in 30 minutes prior to tour departure.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are accessible to those with reasonable mobility, with good handrails and paths. Please note: the Waitomo Glowworm Cave does not have wheelchair access. However, Ruakuri Cave is wheelchair friendly.

Photography and video are permitted in selected areas of Ruakuri Cave so bring your camera.

    If you are confused about a certain tour time, you can confirm your bookings and times by phoning the contact centre on 0800 456 922.

  • What do I need to bring on the tour?

    All you will need are comfortable shoes, a warm jacket, and a camera for Ruakuri Cave.

  • How many people can go on each boat tour?

    There are 23 people or under on each boat tour.

  • How long is each tour?

    Allow 1 hour for the Waitomo Glowworm Cave and 1.5 hours for Ruakuri Cave.

  • Are kids free?

    Under 4 year olds go free, but they must be booked to secure a place on the tour.

  • Can I include a child aged over 14 as a child in a family pass?

    No you can not, you will need to book them as an adult. Proof of age may be required.

  • What is the check-in time and location?

    Waitomo Glowworm Cave tours depart from 39 Waitomo Village Rd. You will then self-drive to the Ruakuri Visitor Centre on Tumutumu Rd, 5 minutes away. Check-in 30 minutes prior to your first tour departure.

  • Can you take photos or video this tour?

    Photography and video are not permitted inside the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, but is allowed in Ruakuri Cave.

  • What does a family pass consist of?

    Two adults and two children.

  • What is the temperature inside the caves?

    16-17 ºC year round
